question web

wow! back-to-school has been super busy this year...
we moved to a beautiful new site,
a brand-new real-life middle school {it's amazing}

I am so blessed to be teaching AVID
{the Summer Institute was the most inspiring conference I've ever attended}

So....what fun it has been creating these AVID "families" in my classroom

this is from our Question Web...

all you need is a great question and a skein of yarn or ball of twin,
start by giving the yarn to one student and asking the question...
we used this one..."If your house were burning down and you had
five minutes to grab THREE things, what would you grab?"
The first student restates the question and gives his/her answer,
then {*important} after letting out a little slack on the yarn/string,
tosses it to another student...that student then restates the question, gives
his/her answer {*again important part....} lets a little slack out, then throws
the yarn to another.....
OMG it's so fun!
With one of my AVID classes the yarn got all knotted up. I have never seen
kids work together better than in this moment! It was like a scene from
Mission Impossible with the laser rays....too cute!
try it for some great team building....you won't be sorry :)

good read...

my sweet friend over at Kingdom Heart Mom
recommended this good read...

image via Kingsolver's authorized site HERE

I usually go for the crime/thriller novels,
so much so that I sometimes think I am an FBI agent
and not a middle school teacher....
this book is just delicious, you will love Kingsolver's style...
and it's a sweet mix of an Appalachian family's struggles
mixed with a strange migration of monarch butterflies.

P.S. The main character, Dellarobia, is named after a wreath
(something she wasn't quit aware of)
I had to google it after my mom told me she totally had this wreath :)

remember these????...

happy reading

bye bye diet drinks...

ok, I'll admit it....I was slightly addicted to Diet Coke
I just quit cold turkey a few weeks ago while on vacation
(and feeling icky from eating on the go, not enough water, etc...)

I was meandering around the bookstore and picked up
Paltrow's It's All Good
which led me to other books....

Dr. Mercola's Sweet Deception

image via  available for purchase here
and through Amazon

take a minute to view this YouTube video from Dr. Mercola...

good news, however, Stevia is an option....
read the article HERE from Dr. Mercola
stevia, sweetener, aspartame, sugar, sweet, FDA, truvia

If you've read anything by Michael Pollan,
you can draw the parallel between the artificial sweetener industry
and the corn industry (ie: high fructose corn syrup, etc...)

I personally had been suffering from headaches, and
although I did know artificial sweeteners were not good for me...
I continued to guzzle the stuff in diet drinks....
Now it's water, organic cane sugar if totally necessary in tea
(we CAN live without the sweet stuff, eh?), and once in
a while stevia with a cappuccino

good to know :)
